This is a nice example of a typical soumak. It is from Fethiye on the south west tip of Turkey. A soumak is a kind of flat weave. It involves threading the weave over and under the warp threads. Some describe this as a kind of brading. It results in a strong textured structure that resembles the density of a tapestry. It also has embroidery added, which is called cicim (djidjim) in Turkey.
